Behind the Camera — Lighthouse Waves

I’ve photographed lighthouses before, but what interested me here was not just the structure itself. The real subject was the relationship between the lighthouse, the rocks, and the movement of the ocean in front of it.

The light was strong and slightly hazy, which helped simplify the scene. Instead of making the image about detail everywhere, it became more about layers: the breaking wave in the foreground, the dark rocks in the middle distance, and the lighthouse standing above everything in the background.

What made this photograph work for me was the foreground wave. Without it, the image would have been a more standard coastal lighthouse photograph. The wave adds movement and gives the photograph a second point of energy, balancing the stillness of the lighthouse.

I also liked the contrast between the warm sky and the colder blue water. It keeps the image from feeling flat and gives it a stronger sense of place. The birds on the rocks were a small detail, but they helped bring more life into the scene without taking attention away from the main structure.
